Coverage by state

JudicialFinder covers 236 federal courts and 2,089 state courts: 12,223 judges serving or on record and 22,295 in history. This page says, tier by tier and state by state, where each bench comes from and how current it is. A judge count elsewhere on this site includes history; here the two are kept apart.

State courts, state by state

Three tiers per state: the court of last resort, the intermediate appellate court where the state has one, and the general-jurisdiction trial courts. “Serving” means a verified roster; “on record” means the CourtListener snapshot of September 30, 2026. Limited-jurisdiction courts (municipal, justice of the peace, magistrate, family, city and similar) are covered only where a state's directory lists them, in Alaska, New York and Ohio, and in no other state.

Legend and cadence

Serving
The court’s current bench comes from a verified roster: the court’s own membership page (courts of last resort, checked July 2, 2026) or the state’s official judicial directory, as of the date in the cell.
On record
The current bench is whoever the CourtListener bulk-data snapshot of September 30, 2026 lists without an end date. Recent departures and appointments may not be reflected, so it is a record, not a claim of currency.
In history
Everyone who has ever held a seat on the court in our data, current and former. A judge count elsewhere on this site includes history; this page separates the two.
Verified roster
A bench whose source is the court or the state itself rather than a third-party snapshot. A judge who drops off a directory between fetches is kept as former, with no invented end date.
Refresh cadence
The federal bench and the 34 state directories are re-fetched weekly. The CourtListener People DB is published at each quarter end and picked up the week it appears. A source that cannot be reached keeps its last good data, and its as-of date does not move.

Questions & answers

Which states have trial-court benches from their official judicial directories?
34 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Each of those benches is the state's own directory, re-fetched weekly, and is labelled "serving" as of the date the directory was last read.
How current is the data?
The federal bench is the Federal Judicial Center directory as of October 19, 2026, re-fetched weekly. The 34 state directories were last read between July 1, 2026 and October 19, 2026, and are re-fetched weekly. Everything sourced from CourtListener's bulk data is its September 30, 2026 snapshot, which is published at each quarter end and picked up the week it appears.
Are municipal, justice of the peace or magistrate courts covered?
Only where a state's official directory lists them, which today means Alaska, New York and Ohio. Limited-jurisdiction courts (municipal, justice of the peace, magistrate, family, city and similar) are not covered in any other state.
What does "on record" mean, and how is it different from "serving"?
"Serving" means the court's current bench comes from a verified roster: the court's own membership page or the state's official directory, as of the date shown. "On record" means the current bench is whoever the CourtListener snapshot of September 30, 2026 lists without an end date; recent departures and appointments may not be reflected. "In history" counts everyone who has ever held a seat on the court in our data, current and former.
Which states have no trial courts covered yet?
14 states: Alabama, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Utah. Their courts of last resort and, where they exist, intermediate appellate courts are covered; their trial benches are not yet.
